TPLF Expands with New Board Chair

Sarah Fulford, a long-standing Foundation Board member and editor-in-chief of Toronto Life, was recently appointed Chair of the Foundation’s board in addition to three new directors. TPLF is proud to also welcome Sharilyn Hale, Susannah K. Robinson, ICD.D and Jennifer Wardrop to the Board.

Why We Fundraise for TPL

The Toronto Public Library Foundation is making it possible for anyone to invest in the health and vitality of our world-class city. Donations to TPLF help support the exemplary collections, ground-breaking programs and services as well as the innovative spaces at the world’s busiest public library system.

TPL is helping to build a Toronto that is:

More Resilient & Connected

When you transform libraries, you transform neighbourhoods.

More Involved & More Informed

Access to lifelong learning opportunities puts people on the path to success.

More Prepared to Thrive in the Digital World

Digital access and digital inclusion is the great equalizer.

More Creative, Accepting & Civically Engaged

Participating in creative and cultural opportunities builds a vibrant, healthy city.

Did You Know?

Toronto Public Library is the busiest library system in the world. Learn about the amazing accomplishments of your library. 2018 TPL Statistics below.

We are grateful to TD Bank Group for generously supporting Toronto Public Library programs, service, collection and community spaces since 1996.

TD Summer Reading

The TD Summer Reading Club is a great way for kids of all ages to read all summer long. More than 300,000 kids explore the fun of reading, anywhere, anytime over the summer thanks to TD’s incredible support. Children who don’t read over the summer risk losing up to three months of hard earned reading progress. Even short bursts of reading can increase a child’s confidence, preparing them to go back to school.

Hear from Library People

“The public library system in Toronto gave me access to a possible life that had music, that had books, that had politics, that had newspapers, that had history…that had everything I needed.” – George Stroumboulopoulos

Whether you are a Library user, or not, if you stand by the core values of Toronto Public Library, and you understand the importance of public libraries and how they enrich the lives of Torontonians… then you are Library People. You believe in equity, diversity, intellectual freedom, innovation, inclusion, integrity, accountability and quality service for everyone in Toronto.

An Evening with Emilio Estevez

The Foundation was honoured to host an exclusive conversation and film screening of “the public” – a poignant film written and directed by and co-starring Emilio Estevez. Radio and television producer and personality George Stroumboulopoulos, moderated an evening with Emilio, joined by Ryan Dowd, author of The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness, and founder of the Homeless Training Institute. More than 450 donors attended the premiere in the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library.

JANSON FAMILY

Helping a Community Thrive in a Digital Age

TPL New Malvern Hub thanks to Estate of Frank Peers

TPL’s Davenport Branch services a thriving neighbourhood of families, seniors as well as a vibrant arts community. It’s also the home branch of the Janson Family who recently gave a generous and much-needed gift to improve some of Davenport’s spaces, including revitalizing the kids zone, and enabling more accessible services to support their community.

DIGITAL UNDERSTANDING

Helping a Community Thrive in a Digital Age

TPL New Malvern Hub thanks to Estate of Frank Peers

Maurice DeGennaro’s family immigrated to Canada many decades ago. He decided to give back years later to a service he used all his life and support his local branch – Deer Park. His donation is helping patrons increase their digital understanding through the addition of a Custom Tech Kit that incorporates laptops, iPads and robotics with dynamic programming aimed at developing interests and confidence with new technology.

New Partnerships and Initiatives

New donors, new programs, new staff, milestones and more; 2018 was a year of many accomplishments at TPLF.

Shopify and TPL: Enriching the Lives of Small Business Owners

Award-winning, Canadian-based multi-channel commerce platform, Shopify, gave a generous donation to enable Library branches to provide Torontonians with free access to a wide range of small business experts, workshops and services that help people build successful small businesses. As TPL’s newest Small Business Partner, Shopify is ensuring entrepreneurs, newcomers and those living in vulnerable communities can come together at TPL and share their work experiences, gain insights and knowledge as well as connect with a thriving small business community.

The Brookfield Institute: Digital Literacy

TPL delivered the Digitally Lit program, a digital literacy + coding pilot in partnership with Ryerson University, the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship (BII+E) and public libraries in five cities across Ontario. Teens like Willayne (right) learn in libraries about HTML coding and digital literacy, ultimately using these technological tools to solve problems, build their networks and critically understand how to engage with digital content.

Google IT Certificate

Education and technology are keys to opportunity, equity and access. Over the next two years, Google.org is providing both financial and instructional support to help skill seekers across Canada prepare for entry-level roles in IT support. Scholarships for the Google IT Support Professional Certificate, developed by Google and hosted on Coursera, will be available from coast to coast. Toronto Public Library is one of four libraries to receive funding to help learners move through the program with ease and receive in-person support during their training.
